Challenges

Points of the problem faced by the customer

Customers have traditionally built production lines consisting of numerous single-purpose machines for mass production processing.
However, under this system, every changeover job requires skilled workers to spend an entire day resetting all machines in the line.
In recent years, labor shortages have made skill transfer increasingly difficult. Furthermore, the cost of specialized inserts, essential for single-purpose machine processing, has been getting higher, making it difficult to maintain the customer’s current production style.

Solutions

We determined that our parallel two-spindle CNC turning machine would be the optimal solution to address the customer’s concerns and proposed replacing their single-purpose machines.
Although the cutting speed of our machine may be slower than that of a single-purpose machine, our parallel two-spindle CNC turning machine can accommodate up to two loaders and comes standard with inter-machine linking capability.

For this project, we implemented a two-machine configuration to keep the line cycle time within the customer’s acceptable range.

In addition, by switching to CNC-controlled turret-type turning machines, the number of tools that can be mounted per machine increased, and inserts could be selected from standard catalog items.

How did it work to the customer?

By replacing our CNC Tuning Machine, now anyone can perform changeover operations without relying on a limited number of skilled members.
This has also reduced the time commitment and workload for experienced staff members, allowing them to focus more on core shop floor tasks.
Additionally, running costs related to cutting tools have been reduced to approximately half of the previous levels.
After the machine installation, we received feedback from the customer indicating new benefits in the following areas:

・Workpiece size limitations on the single-purpose machines were overcome, expanding the range of parts that can now be processed
・Stability and uptime have improved because the loader reliably handles workpiece loading/unloading onto the spindle and transfers to preceding/subsequent processes

As shown, we frequently observe cases where performance exceeds the customer's initial expectations.
We encourage customers currently using single-purpose machines to take this opportunity to consider upgrading.
