Challenges

Key problems faced by the customer

One customer was producing a shaft workpiece that required drilling at its center.
However, because the workpiece was quite long, deep-hole drilling was required, making the use of a long drill unavoidable.

Under these conditions, increasing the tool rotation speed can cause the drill to vibrate due to centrifugal force.
As a result, the coaxial accuracy of the deep hole relative to the reference diameter became unstable, and the customer was unable to find an effective solution.

Solutions

After receiving this inquiry, Muratec’s after-sales support team reviewed the situation and proposed a solution using simultaneous rotation of the spindle and the live tool.
Through this method, the workpiece is clamped in the chuck and rotated as usual, while the drill rotates in the opposite direction during machining.

By rotating both the workpiece and the drill, the required cutting speed can be achieved while keeping the drill’s individual rotation speed lower.
This helps suppress vibration caused by centrifugal force and stabilizes the machining process.

How did it work to the customer?

By adopting this machining method, the customer achieved stable coaxial accuracy.
In addition, this approach can be effective in addressing issues such as unexpected drill breakage, improving product accuracy, and enhancing overall process reliability.
