Nangoku Miroku MFG Co. (located in Nangoku City, Kochi Prefecture, Japan) is one of Japan’s leading firearms manufacturers, specializing in hunting rifles and carrying out every process in-house—from barrel machining to woodworking and final assembly. With more than a century of accumulated expertise in precision machining, the company has earned high recognition both in Japan and abroad for the development and production of competition shotguns, such as those used in clay shooting, as well as OEM products. By combining the latest industrial technologies with the craftsmanship of skilled artisans, they deliver products that embody both safety and superior quality.

This time, they have introduced the three-turret specification of the CNC Twin-Spindle Opposed Turning Center MT100, which enables highly efficient multi-tasking through process integration and automation.

We interviewed this customer when they came to our Inuyama factory for machine pre-acceptance test.

Background of the Introduction

Could you tell us about the challenges your factory faced before adopting our product?

When considering the introduction of a new machine, we were struggling with the question of how to achieve automation. Options such as robot arms or add-on loaders were available; however, several aspects of the actual operation did not fully convince us. While searching for alternative solutions, we came across Muratec’s machine with loaders.

What impressed us was that Muratec’s products integrate the loader with the machine itself, enabling automation that includes peripheral units as well. Although we had not initially requested it, Muratec advised us that the inspection process could also be integrated. As a result, we added a measuring unit, and we are now truly experiencing the benefits.

The decisive factor for adoption

インタビューをする女性

Muratec

Please tell us what made you decide to adopt our products.

The main reason is the wide range of processing due to the three-turret specification.
Since the structure allows up to two turrets up and down to access to one axis, simultaneous cutting and tool advance indexing are possible.
Processing has become more efficient.
The cycle time has also been improved, and I am satisfied because it was at the desired time.

When I consulted with them about machining difficult-to-cut parts, I was also impressed by the response they gave well.
They have a lot of knowledge of automation and processing, and are very reliable.

Effects of the Introduction

Muratec

Could you tell us about the effects after our product was delivered?

The most significant difference compared to before is that, with the implementation of the automatic measuring unit, we are now able to perform 100% inspection. Since the workpieces have many measurement points, manual inspection could only manage sampling checks at best. In addition to improving quality and accuracy, the elimination of previous manual workloads has brought significant labor-saving benefits.

I also appreciate that the machine stops immediately when an NG result is detected. Previously, production would continue even during measurement, which carried the risk of producing a large number of defective parts. Now we can avoid wasting material, which gives us great peace of mind.

Thank you very much for sharing your insights. Muratec’s transfer loaders feature three-axis drive—not only up and down, left and right, but also front and back—providing high compatibility with peripheral units such as measuring and washing units.

We also have case studies where we proposed automatic measuring machines, so please take a look.

Future Vision

Muratec

Final question, could you please tell us about your future prospects and challenges?

We would like to further increase the number of machines that can support labor reduction. Since we see labor shortages becoming an increasingly serious issue in the near future, we are counting on Muratec to continue developing machines that can address labor-saving needs and operate effectively even without specialized skills.
