The Key to Process Integration!
Muratec's Tapping Function

Challenges

Points of the problem faced by the customer

Tapping is a machining process used to form threads in metal sheets, and it is an essential step in precision sheet metal fabrication.
Although tapping can be performed manually with a drill press, this approach increases the risk of quality defects and missed taps.

When the number of tapping points or production volume is high, some factories assign a dedicated operator to the tapping process. This can lead to increased labor hours and work‑in‑process accumulation.
Many customers involved in sheet metal processing may be facing these same challenges.

Solutions

Proposal: Process Integration with 4‑Axis / 8‑Axis Rigid Tapping Units
Muratec blank processing machines are equipped with a true rigid tapping system that synchronizes feed and rotation through a servo motor.
This enables high‑speed, high‑quality tapping while eliminating the need to reduce the number of tools in the turret, thanks to a dedicated tapping unit.
Additionally, the system offers three key features that suit a wide range of applications.

[Points]
1. Supports a wide variety of materials, sheet thicknesses, and tap sizes, and is compatible with both cutting and forming taps.
2. An alarm detects tool breakage before machining begins.
The tap can be replaced with commercially available products.
3. Hit‑count management and a paired‑tool function ensure safe automatic operation.

How did it work to the customer?

By consolidating multiple processes into a single machine — such as upper and lower burring using forming tools or tapping after chamfering — you can significantly reduce lead time.
In particular, eliminating the time spent moving parts between processes and setting up a drill press directly reduces processing costs. Many customers have told us that the cost benefits exceeded their initial expectations before installing the equipment.
Beyond the direct advantages of reducing quality defects and preventing missed tapping operations, this approach can also deliver substantial results, boosting sales and profitability.
